The Tayloright #2 choice is the Exerpeutic 400XL Folding Recumbent Bike. This was my old recumbent bike. This one is smaller than the new gold model but it’s also much more convenient to bring along. It really does live up to the word “folding” in its name! And it may be small but it can carry a person weighing as much as 300 pounds!

The seat on the Exerpeutic 400XL Folding recumbent bike is quite comfortable, it is large (although not as large as the gold model’s) and has great back support. However, I do have to say that instead of calling this one a recumbent bike, I would rather say it is a semi-recumbent bike. It does not fully recline. The angle is simply not as reclined as the real one but the comfort is great nonetheless. The LCD screen displays the distance, time, speed, pulse, and the calories you burn while cycling. Recumbent biking offers a great cardio workout while watching TV or listening to music. 

The Exerpeutic 400XL recumbent bike allows you to adjust the level of tension, there are up to 8 levels of resistance. These 8 levels will help you achieve toned leg muscles. You can even set milestones for yourself to make sure that you do not remain stuck in a single exercise routine for long. What Is A Recumbent Bike?

So here I am blabbing on and on about something you might not even know anything about – silly old me. First things first, let’s do a short intro for recumbent bikes before we go on further.

To start, let’s get to know why recumbent bikes are named as such:

Recumbent basically means to lie flat on a surface with the body situated in a supine position. So it’s kind of when you go to sleep or go stargazing. We should consider ourselves lucky the word “recumbent” never became mainstream lingo. Imagine saying “I want to get in a recumbent position” or “Stargazing is better when you lie recumbently.” It would be totally weird.

Anyway, “recumbent” may mean “to lie completely flat” but of course, that definition doesn’t apply to recumbent bikes. Let’s just say it’s one of the few exceptions where language doesn’t mean exactly as it sounds. After all, can you imagine cycling in a supine position? That would be dreadful and maybe totally impossible. In the case of a recumbent bike, recumbent means “to recline or stretch backwards” – thanks to the nifty seats recumbent bikes come with!

Long story short, a recumbent bike is cycling equipment with a reclined seat. It allows you to rest your back even as you cycle for long hours. And according to many studies, several benefits are attributed to exercising with a recumbent bike. We’ll go into further detail later on.

What Is The Problem With Traditional Biking?

In a traditional or upright biking position, the biker is situated on the bike’s seat with no back support and with the pedals placed underneath the torso. When done right, the biker should stretch his arms out to reach the handles with his lower torso, back, upper shoulder, and neck arching upward.  The buttocks should be firmly placed on the seat and the feet locked on each pedal. Upright biking is exactly like outdoor biking – the only difference is that the equipment is stationary.

Now, let’s move on to the main issues of the traditional biking position.

When a person bikes in such a manner, back and thigh sores are bound to develop over the course of the exercise – especially when the person is doing long laps.  

What Are The Differences Between Upright & Recumbent Biking?

You may think that there is not much difference between upright and recumbent biking. After all, you just have to pedal them both – right? However I, along with several more fitness gurus, beg to differ. Recumbent biking is different from upright biking in more ways than one. To be more specific, three things are prominently different between the two: the seat, the pedal, and the biking position.

Let’s start with The Seat:

The seat is generally wider and more accommodating in a recumbent bike. Both cheeks of your bottoms can be positioned squarely and fittingly. This helps you avoid the common enemy among cycling exercises – saddle soreness. When your lower buttock is seated in a narrow seat, some areas will feel more pressure than others. The balancing of weight becomes uneven, putting most of the impact on the outer areas. Saddle soreness is something experienced by most upright bikers. This is because the seating space is limited – much like the traditional outdoor bike.

On the other hand, recumbent bikes come with a comfier seat. Not only does a recumbent bike come with a back support, the seating space is generally wider as well. Allowing the rider to be seated in a comfortable fashion as if he or she is seating in a normal swivel chair! The recumbent bike’s seat also has arm rests. This can serve as a balancer and provide additional support during pedalling. Picture it as a dentist’s chair but with pedals instead of a leg raise.

Next, we have The Pedal:

The pedals are also different between the two bikes – in terms of positioning, to be exact. The shape and design of the pedals are more or less the same, with the foot rest wrapped with a supporting strap for easy cycling, but their placement is different in an upright and recumbent bike.

In an upright bike, the pedals are positioned beneath the body. To pedal, the rider must kick and cycle downwards while maintaining an upright body position so the body can be put under a lot of stress – especially the abdominal muscles. Upright biking, after all, makes sure that you work the same type and number of muscles you use when going for an outdoor bike. Also, since the pedal is placed under the body, most riders will try to stand while cycling after they start feeling sore from seating on the narrow seat. Standing on an upright bike can be dangerous, even if the equipment is stationary. One misstep and it can lead to a nasty injury – or at least a swollen knee.

On the other hand, a recumbent bike’s pedals are positioned in front of the body – a tad lower than the seat’s height. To pedal, the rider extends his feet in front to reach the pedals with his back reclined onto the rest. The pedalling movement is forward which has less impact and pressure than the downward movement. The rider can exert more force with less effort with the forward pedalling movement. This reduces the stress and muscle fatigue the rider experiences as he uses the recumbent bike – even after prolonged periods of biking. Technically speaking, the rider still achieves full body workout, only with less focus on the abdominal muscles. Since the rider is on a relaxed, supine position, the upper body becomes relaxed and less pressured. The workout is concentrated more on the knees, ankles, upper and lower legs.

Last but not least, we have The Biking Position:

This difference should be obvious enough. In upright biking, the position is – well, upright. In the same way the recumbent biking position is recumbent or reclined. The rider’s body posture is positioned quite differently on each bike. And the aftermath of each cycling session strongly depends on it.

In an upright bike, the rider extends his arms to reach the bike’s handles – for balance and support. When riders do this, their upper body usually arches upward. Starting from the lower torso, the rider’s upper body inclines – with the neck raised the highest. The head is slightly tilted up so that the rider faces the front squarely. This position is rather rigorous and stressful for the spine, mainly because it is not in proper posture. However, it also tenses up a lot of upper body muscles, putting them to work. So I guess you can say that although it requires more effort, it’s ideal for firming and toning the muscles – especially on the abdominal area.

On the other hand, the biking position for a recumbent bike is reclined. This means that the rider lays on an elevated back support – just high enough to see past his knees. Both arms are also placed in rests so most of the movement lies heavily on the lower body. The recumbent position frees the rider of spinal stress and helps maintain proper body posture. In theory and practice, recumbent biking causes less sores and muscle pains due to its comfortable seating and pedalling positions. But because fewer muscles are put to work, recumbent biking (although still considered a full body workout) has less impact and may not work well for individuals whose goal in working out is to firm and tone the muscles – except for the leg muscles, since they receive ample movement. Recumbent biking is recommended for people who are only after the cardio training, however. And it is also considered a safer cycling exercise for people suffering from extreme spinal stress and other physiological deficiencies that prohibit rigorous exercises. With recumbent bikes, you can get your daily dose of sweat without having to deal with body and muscle sores.

And that’s it. These three factors set recumbent and upright bikes apart. Whether you favour one over the other or find them both useful is entirely up to your own prerogative. Some people will prefer the easy, stress-free ride of a recumbent bike while others will prefer the heavy training given by an upright bike. Some others may not even have a preference at all! It’s a case-to-case basis, really. This study even concludes that the muscles used in upright biking are practically the same with recumbent biking.

Then again, there are people who actually NEED to use recumbent bikes. Let’s find out if you are one of them.
